“Experiencing the love and life of Christ through vibrant and life changing communities and creative partnerships.”
Pentecost Sunday service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Denham Grierson. It was lovely to see the church filled with red and candles alight on the altar. We had a very varied service with readings in Dutch, English and Arabic. Denham spoke to us about the tasks of an ordained minister which are varied, including the sacramental parts (baptism, marriage, funerals included). Pastoral Care and teaching are a large part of the tasks of the ministers. Understanding and interpreting the Bible and Mission or how we share our faith is a part of the role also. Justice is important and the minister must ensure that this is explained to the congregation. The congregation has to follow and the minister leads. Rev. Ann has all these roles in our church and community. Denham spoke of the most dramatic events in the 19th Century – he spoke of the eruption of Krakatoa which produced the loudest noise, heard in Perth over 2300 miles away. The 20th century had many events including April 26th explosion of Chernobyl. Thousands were evacuated, hundreds affected. As significant as these explosions is the event in a room over 2000years ago – the day of Pentecost – even more significant when wind and fire swept the assembly. From this event lives were transformed and today this continues. This is the most significant for Christians across the world.
