Sunday 22nd May 2016

“Experiencing the love and life of Christ through vibrant and life changing communities and creative partnerships.”

Rev Dr. Des Parker conducted Sunday’s communion service. At the start of the service we were shown the art work which is being produced by Rob Matheson and an enthusiastic group at Beaconhills College. The colour are fantastic. Sunday was Trinity Sunday where we see God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit. The Church has struggled to come to terms with the concept. Des spoke to us about the Gospel of John reading where Jesus says that he has much to say to people but people (his disciples) don’t always understand them. Jesus was referring to future believers and what they may believe. New understandings will be revealed. The Basis of Union of the Uniting Church comments on the ideas and language of the original stories so Uniting Church members were told to make sure that they adapt to new language and ideas as time goes by. Our understanding of God and the Bible will progress as time goes by and we need to adapt. God didn’t stop revealing himself to us when the Bible was written, he continues to reveal himself today with fresh meaning through Jesus’ life stories. The Holy Spirit will assist people to understand God and help us create a relationship with Jesus. Only 8% of Australians attend church regularly – this rises with Easter and Christmas and only 50% are believers. Many say they are Spiritual but not religious (SBNR). Where does this leave us?
