“Experiencing the love and life of Christ through vibrant and life changing communities and creative partnerships.”
Sunday’s service was conducted by Joan Vogels along with the Bev Palmer from Faith and Fabric at Traralgon Uniting Church. We have been so lucky to have such a wonderful display in our church premises over two days. The pieces of craft work are absolutely wonderful. Joan spoke to the children about Palm Sunday and lay down palm leaves for them to walk over. Bev told us about the fabric art group which started 32 years ago by making a banner for their church which they showed us and it is very tame by today’s superb creations. The group were then asked to make some banners for a presentation at the church. The ladies decided they liked to express their faith through the banners which showed the good news visually. The traditional Christian symbols, known to churchgoers, did not come across to all so new images were created. Discovering “pins” meant that new banners were made differently and the creations were great and if each person used their small gift it spoke to others and God was glorified. In 1998 an artist using the Traralgon Church spoke to the group and arranged an exhibition which was hung at the Lutheran Church Southbank. This was a great success and the comments in the visitors’ book were very effective. This exhibition led to other exhibitions, now 52 times later with the publication of two books, a cd and cards have also occurred. The ladies were creating images to adorn the worship places and to lift people’s minds to a higher plane. Different members of the group have different skills and all together they are inspired. One creation was done with tiny pieces of paper but put together they create a beautiful image. The group has changed over time. They select a theme from the bible readings, brainstorm the topic, discuss and experiment with fabric – over 6 to 8 weeks. When a new one is introduced the congregation is asked what they see. They are asked what they feel and what meaning they see. The congregation is asked what title would be given to the piece. We were shown a beautiful piece with a dove, having many different white and blue pieces. This showed that each small part adds to the whole. Our thanks to the Traralgon ladies for their special gifts.
